Cardinal Gibbons takes swimming state crowns
Munroe wins girls' diving;Crusader girls capture third straight NCHSAA 2A title
RALEIGH—Cardinal Gibbons’ boys medaled in six of 12 events en route to the school’s first N.C. High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 2A swimming state championship Saturday (Feb. 2) at NC State’s Casey Natatorium. The Crusaders (313 points) outscored runner-up Hibriten by 50 points.
The Crusader girls’ first place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay secured the team’s ninth medal Saturday and third state championship in as many seasons of NCHSAA membership.
The girls’ 416 points were 253 more than runner-up Elkin, and due in large part to a school precedent-setting relays sweep including the 200 medley and 200 freestyle events.
Kristyn Repke, Kirsten Esplin, Allison Schult and Heather Ahmed claimed gold in the 200 medley relay (1:54.74) by nearly four seconds ahead of second place West Davidson. Ahmed, one of just two seniors among the relays (Taylor Edmonds) joined Edmonds, Anne Thelen and Nina Mascia in edging Elkin by .06 seconds (1:42.94 to 1:43) in the 200 freestyle relay. Mascia, Esplin, Repke and Cameron Figures posted a 3:41 mark in the 400 freestyle relay – almost nine seconds faster than Elkin.
Esplin and Mascia took silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.18) and 200 freestyle (1:57.39), respectively. In third were Repke (100 freestyle, 54.79), Figures (200 individual medley, 2:13.66) and Caitlin Zanga (500 freestyle, 5:21.15).
Among boys, freshman Nathan Walters medaled in all four of his events, including a golden 100 butterfly (54.97). Walters’ third place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:54.03) completed a trio of bronze efforts following teammates John Wayand (200 individual medley, 2:07.15) and Adam Fullerton (100 freestyle, 51.56).
Walters was a member of the Crusaders’ 200 medley (Wayand, Kevin Parks, Ryan Czejkowski, 1:46.55) and 200 freestyle relay quartets (Czejkowski, Fullerton, Chris Blake, 1:36.93), both second behind Hibriten – the team runner-up for the second consecutive year. The Crusader boys fell three points shy of Hibriten in 2007.
In Friday’s diving competition (at Pullen Aquatic Center), senior Siobhan Munroe won the girls’ title. Munroe’s 273.55 points were 17.9 better than her second place finish a year ago.
