'07 Grad is star athlete & student at Georgetown |
Too often, student-athletes fail to get the recognition they deserve for their efforts off the field and in the classroom. After all, student does come before athlete. Few embody the term quite as fully as junior middle blocker Vanessa Dorismond of the Georgetown volleyball team. For years, she has shown a remarkable penchant for shining in the classroom and on the court as both an ambitious student and a star of Georgetown volleyball. Cardinal Gibbons High School Athletics Day |
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker proclaimed December 4, 2007, "Cardinal Gibbons HIgh School Athletics Day" in recognition of the school's academic and athletic excellence.
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker proclaimed December 4, 2007, “Cardinal Gibbons High School Athletics Day” in recognition of the school’s academic and athletic excellence. CGHS Athletic Director Dean Monroe and Assistant Athletic Director Jim Freeman accepted a framed copy of the proclamation on behalf of the school at a ceremony held recently at Raleigh’s city hall.
The proclamation states that Cardinal Gibbons High School “has been an outstanding model of both academic and athletic excellence in Raleigh” for the past decade.
One example of the school’s academic excellence is the fact that 70 current and recent graduates of CGHS were designated AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) exams.
The proclamation also specifically mentions several state titles CGHS athletic teams received during the fall 2007 sports season. They are: the Women’s Cross Country team captured its fourth consecutive state title and its eighth state title in nine years; the cheerleading squad won its second consecutive state title and its third since 2001; and, the Volleyball team won its third consecutive state title and its ninth in 10 years.
Those three state titles bring to five the total number of state championships CGHS teams won during the 2006-2007 school. The other CGHS teams winning state titles are men’s dual tennis and women’s soccer. Additionally, CGHS also won the Wachovia Cup in 2007, its sixth since 2001. The Wachovia Cup recognizes overall excellence in high school athletics among North Carolina High School Athletic Association and North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association member institutions.
